Oceans Alive Trust is a Kenyan not-for-profit organisation, created to promote, facilitate and accelerate environmental, economic and socio-cultural change for good on the Kenyan coast.

Oceans Alive grew out of the experience of founding members of Kuruwitu Conservation and Welfare Association (KCWA), Kenya’s first Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA), which was set up in response to rapidly declining fish stocks in the Kuruwitu Lagoon.

Oceans Alive was founded to implement and accelerate positive environmental, economic and socio-cultural changes in coastal communities like Kuruwitu. We want to create a LMMA network that works together with the common goal of establishing sustainable marine resources along the Kenyan coast. We use integrated strategies to provide all-round support, taking into account the relationships between the people, their health and their environment.

Our holistic approach has been shown to have much greater positive effects than single-sector plans, which fail to take all of the relevant factors into account. We therefore see far-reaching positive impacts within these communities such as engaging women in alternative livelihood activities that decrease reliance on fishing.

OA aims to establish an exemplar area of marine conservation that will set a precedent for other communities at a local, national and international scale.
